Alexandra Rigazzi-Tarling M.Mus
I am a trained opera singer and voice teacher with a very strong background in alternative therapies. I began my training at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London where I gained my Bachelor of Music Degree and Masters in Music Performance. Throughout my training performed extensively as a soloist in concert and recital in the UK and internationally, venues including the Royal Albert Hall, The Purcell Room, St. George’s Chapel, Windsor, The Icelandic Embassy, Salurinn Concert Hall in Reykjavik, Iceland and Zurich Opera House.
In 2005 I moved to Italy where I continued my vocal training and performance career.
I underwent many vocal changes throughout my training, studied voice with many different teachers in different countries and felt I was constantly changing techniques to fit different ideas on vocal production, breath support and the tone and timbre of the voice. Although I was working with some of the best teachers and coaches in the business, I was not happy with the sound I was making. My voice didn’t feel right. I learnt many important theories in vocal production, but it was almost too much. I had forgotten what my voice sounded like. This led to much frustration and fear in performance. It was only when I realised that I had lost my vocal direction, I could start to work from the basics again, and re-find my natural voice.
Throughout my training I learnt the power of strong breath control, how to deal with performance stress and nerves, the importance of posture and how our thoughts about ourselves and experiences live with us in our muscles and in every cell of our bodies. Negative emotions are carried in every step of our being and prevent us from moving forward and recognising and realising our true selves. They make us self-conscious and fearful even if we don’t always know it, and we see the effects in our lives, often wondering why things occur as they do.
One day I started thinking about atoms, and how everything, including ourselves is just made up of vibrating particles.
I spent much of my time researching the subject of sound and frequency and I became aware of the huge amount of scientific research that has been done linking the use of sound with healing the human body. Everything solid that we perceive in this physical world including our own bodies is in fact a cluster of atoms, sub-atoms, particles and at the base of it all, just pure energy which can be measured. When one thinks in this way, many answers to universal questions can be found, and the huge divide between spirituality and science no longer exists. If everything is energy in its most basic form then scientifically we understand that it is resonating to a particular frequency. It is at this point that modern medicine can seem slightly absurd and alternative therapies can offer a cure. If we think of the different parts of our body like the strings of a musical instrument, if a string is out of tune with the rest of the instrument, it is not drugged, poisoned or removed, but simply tuned. This concept also applies to the human body, but we must bear in mind that many of our life style choices, for example, what we eat, the way we choose to think and our increasing usage of electromagnetic waves among other things often bombard us with a lower frequency energy than we should be receiving in order to stay healthy. My point being that any alternative therapy needs to become part of our daily routine to counteract our life style. It is not enough to go once or twice to a therapy and then claim it didn’t work!
Rudolph Steiner said: - There will come a time when a diseased condition will not be described as it is today by physicians and psychologists, but it will be spoken of in musical terms, as one would speak of a piano that was out of tune.
I always found it amazing when people would approach me after a performance saying how much better, or how uplifted they felt after hearing me sing. I was of course very flattered, but now I understand this differently. Likewise when teaching singing, or more specifically teaching people how to find their voice (!), their unique instrument, or method of sound expression that is personal to them, I become aware of the positive changes and developments on the psychological level of the student leading to increased energy and vitality in the physical body and therefore in their life as a whole. Why is it that so many people claim they cannot sing when our voices are one of the most fundamental parts of our creative Being? For whatever reason a person’s voice has been suppressed, finding it again can be quite an emotional journey and clearing process. The Power of Intention is always at play, the student wants to improve and/or find their voice and so with this thought process behind the work wonderful things begin to happen on many levels, including actually supporting the voice which, a mystery it seems to so many in the world of singing, is more or less just the intention of the breath flow. Likewise when administering sound healing, it is the intention, behind the production of sound (frequency) that guides the energy vibration to its target. Intention is thought, thought is energy.
I have worked with people to help them find their voices again whether it be for general use in daily life, for a presentation at work, a school play, or just to re-find the joy of singing! I have worked with people with speech problems, low self esteem and muscle disorders such as Dystonia. The power of releasing the voice can set up positive waves of movement throughout our entire being. Life may not turn out like we thought, but is what you thought you should be, really making you happy?
